  • Great car but always in the garage

First year when we got it, it drives great, comfortable, but then there's always something wrong with it e.g. over heats, lots of engine oil leaks, tail gate won't open or close (fixed 3x), tire pressure reset does not work, bluetooth info gets stuck, produces serious break dust, automatic setting for ac does not work that good (fogs windows), engine fan kicks on hi-speed a lot, etc...
  • Performance car means performance car parts

In 2018 I picked up a used 2011 X5 SAV (72k miles $14500) loaded with all the extras for what I thought was a really good deal. It drives great. It's probably the best car I've ever had. Looks like a new outside and in with Lux finishes, great speaker system, heated and ventilated massaging seat, 4 zone climate control, pano roof, smooth ride, great acceleration, corners like a car, tech that is on par with a new car, better resolution on the nav and cameras than most cars even today, backup camera, 360 cameras and sensors, blue tooth, USB port to link device. I am no stranger to used cars and assume that I'll have a few repairs annually. I also assumed that BMW repairs and general maintenance would be a little more than that of a ford, toyota, kia, standard car, etc. BUT I definitely underestimated the cost. Here are a few examples: need new tires. These are staggered (super wide on the back, think corvette or porsche). More expensive than regular tires and IF you go with the recommended Run Flats (since there's no spare for this car) it'll cost a bit more. While the cost is annoying, the real eye opener is that these tires only last 25-30k miles. So you'll be replacing them 2x as much as regular car tires. I opted for non-run flats with a standard 55k mile rating....but in my ignorance didn't realize that if you have staggered wheels these ratings are cut in half. I've had the car for 41000 miles and replaced the back tires 2x and the front ones 1x and will have to replace the front ones in another 15k miles. (for some reason they last longer...although they still recommend you replace all at once - i just didn't- I was told it won't cause a problem). There's a slight oil leak and they recommended I change the oil pan. Most shops don't seem to have whatever gear necessary to do this so you must go to the dealer - 5k. ummmmm I'll just leak a little oil then since this car is 9 years old with 112k miles on it. On every other routine maintenance thing that I've had to do (there's been a little more than I expected but all very routine for a car with 100k miles of this age) the price has been a solid 20-30% more than I expected. The x5 gets it's performance from performance parts and they cost more. So for value of car - I give it a 3/5. If money doesn't matter it's an amazing machine, but you really have to ask yourself if you NEED that performance or if it's just cool to have. Also note that this car is built for the road NOT off road. This is where most people spend all of their time. If you're buying an SUV knowing that you aren't going offroading this will outperform everything else on the market. If you're looking to go offroading I'd look for something 4x4 (not AWD) with higher ground clearance and just know that it won't drive as well on paved surfaces. Going over fields and such is totally fine in the x5. I've done it at speed several times with no problems and never gotten stuck anywhere, but I don't think I'd try to drive this through a creek or on a beech...get a 4Runner for that.
